New TF: Animated Megatron Artwork and book info

Posted by:

There is a preorder posted at comicsinfinity.com for the first two volumes of the TF: Animated book being released by IDW (sporting artwork directly from the TV show). Both volumes one and two have a general summery, but most interesting is volume two's new artwork of Megatron.

I just know all the Geewunners are gonna be SUPER HAPPY about the cannon addition. Last time we first saw Megs in this form, everyone was all like, "What, no fusion cannon?!!" or, "Where's his fusion cannon?!!" or even, "They can give him a sword, but NO FUSION CANNON?!!!"

Seriously, this isn't G1 anymore. Yes, it was great and had glory, and homages are nice, but you got to let go of the "G1-only clan" so you can enjoy the rest of the franchise without complaining how "this isn't like G1" or "that's not what happened in G1". It's really getting annoying.

Here here Sabrblade, people need to know when to let go. This is why I never had a big problem with the movie or Animated. Couldn't understand why people wanted it to be 1984 again so badly. Granted my initial response to the first animated picture shown was negative, but I am respecting it now, mostly because they are going back to storytelling the way they did it in Beast Wars. I can get over animation for that.

Sabrblade the thing is, for me at least, G1 was the toons i grew up with. I loved everything about it. I still do. Now about the other series, man the japanese wannabes for example, i don't know if i should laugh or cry. I mean from the point on you hear a robot say "ultra kick!" and the screen turns all power ranger style. you gotta admit it sucks real bad.. i didn't mind the movie , it was really enjoyable actually. watched it more than twice eheh. G1 was the start of it all, it's natural ppl use as comparisson. It's even harder not to do this knowing they have the same names as their G1 counterparts.

I understand how special G1 was too a lot of you. But many of you are strongly disliking the new designs BECAUSE it was not like G1. Some of you were refusing to have anything to do with Animated simply because Megatron lacked a cannon in previous images. Not everything has to be like G1. I grew up with Beast Wars and thought it was THE greatest thing ever on television (well, that and Digimon), and it will alway be special to me. But I'm not reusing to watch the other series that weren't like Beast Wars. I even liked Beast Machines. Whenever I watch the DVDs, I just have to watch evey episode since it was so complex.

As for the newer anime-like series... well at least they tried. They had their moments: Unicron's return, a new Matrix, Sideways (you gotta admit he was cool), (Black) Unicron's final battle against Optimus Supreme, Megatron finding Super Energon and becoming a very G1-ispired Galvatron, The new Combiners (Gestalts), TF: Cybertron's "Till all are one," moment, Primus' debut, the Ark supercannon, and of course, the line in the Cybertron theme song, "The Autobots wage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decepticons," returning even if it sounded corny. All these were the good point of the Unicron Trilogy, so it isn't all bad.

And as for the reused character names. The only ones who usually stay true to the original counterparts are Prime/al, Megs, Galvy, and Screamer. All the others are unsually just used to fill in the blank for "Hi my name is_______." They don't have to reflect their original counterparts. For instance, take the name Ironhide. The first guy was an old warrior with experience and guts. Then the Beast Wars elephant wasn't shown in fiction, but his BWII recolor was, Santon, who was a medic that would not kill. Then the RID Spychanger truck who was strong and very good Friends with fellow Spychanger Mirage. Then, in Energon, an imature young warrior who replaced Hot Shot as the kid-friendly bot. Finally, the Movie one, an aggressive battle ungry weapons specialist with the desire to use his cannons. Same name, all different. It really doesn't matter if they aren't like the originals, as long as they are promising characters.

Good thing the animators seem to like the original character models a lot.

Especially considering the small Star Convoy homage of Prime.

That's not the movie Megs' head. Look closer. Pre-Earth Megs has the movie head. And he looks more like Super Megatron to me.

What do you mean Super Megatron, Saberblade? If there is such a thing I would like to know.

Super Megatron was a Japan Manga(comic) only thing. It told of Galvatron being found and being restored back to himself but more powerful.

check this out.

Yeah, Galvatron was basically reformatted into Super Megatron. I kind of liked the design though with the ship.. technically the first spaceship Megs.

He was revived by the Unicron-like Dark Nova:

as Super Megatron. He fought against Optimus Prime as Star Convoy:

...who led a small teams of the best Autobots known as the Battlestars. Which consisted of his micromaster and former successor Hot Rod, the battleship Grandus:

...his micromaster Spinner, the starship Sky Garry (who led before Star Convoy):

,...his micromaster Shotbomber, and the micromaster-combiner Sixliner:

Together they defeated Super Megatron and his Galaman:

...and Novaroid:

...army. He was then upgraded to Ultra Megatron:

And his army was upgraded to Great Galamans

and Great Novaroids.

All were eventually defeated. Dark Nova then took matters into his own "tentacles". He absorded Ultra Megatron and "transformed" into Star Giant:

He was defeated too, however. The End. ^_^

Defeat and upgrade, then defeat. The cycle of Decepticon (or Destron in that case) life. I prefer Super Megatron to Ultra... anyway, it's all Japanese continuity, this stuff isn't offical in the Western G1 canon.

Megs comes back in G2 manga, but his fate is not shown, nor is Prime's or anyone's.

Personally I tend to view G1 and G2 as separate continuities, but I am ok with thinking them as the same. Considering the G2 cartoon is just a rerun of G1 with a CG cube thing in the eye catch. However I consider the comics separate universes there.

The Japanese G2 manga, not comic, is in the same continuity as the G1 tv series. The G2 tv series was an excuse to get the G1 back on the air. The G2 comic continue from the G1 comic.

I think "SkyGarry" has to be the funnies/worst Transformers name of all time!

Worse than... "Big Daddy"? Or the names in the Headmasters/Masterforce/Victory Singapore dubs?

I have to say. I grew up with the unicron triology so Armada ended up my fave. Then tha actually got me into g1 (since Armada was originally intended to be a g1 sequal and there's plenty of evidnece for that in the show.) In any case i liked the movie cause it WAS really well made and the characters have minor homages (although megatron was just outside the box). With all that said, and still keeping an open mind, I still dislike TF animated because I just think that the organic look doesn't suite them well. In adddition to being used the TF being boxy, these really have horrible proportion, and I just think it doesn't look nice.

Going back to Sabrblades's point about the fusion cannon, the thing actually disappeared only when cybertron megs came out. Armada Megatron had the canon right next to his right hip under his right arm (which might actually be a tribute to how the G1 Megatron had his gunbarrel in the exact same spot). Also Energon Galvatron (you really can't call it Megatron) had the tank attach to his arm which is specifically designed to act like the g1 fusion cannon. Movie Megatron had the horrible fusion cannon but at least it was there. So there's pribably only been one or two megatrons/galvatrons without fusion cannons.

Oh and for anyone complaing about the recent animes, G1 was an anime to begin with. The eye style, the face plates on many bots (including prime), and plenty of other details are typical characteristics of anime bots. And there are alot of bots who call out there abilities (like ironhide's liquid nitrogen and starscreams nullray.)

About that, Black Starscream, I've heard many people arguing about whether or not G1 was an anime. Some argue that it was and say it was done by Toei (who I know for sure did the movie and HM/MF/V/Z) and AKOM. Some argue it wasn't and say it was done by Sunbow. Could someone clarify this for me please?

Oh one thing about the names. Interestingly enough, in Micron Legend (japanese armada), since many of the characters were meant to be new versions of g1 characters, the names were more appropriate. Red Alert in america for instance was named Ratchet in Japan, and Smokescreen was named Grapp because he was intended to be Grapple. Also in Superlink (energon) downshift was named Wheeljack. Other names weren't as well done (although Tidal wave was meant to be an homage to shickwave, and scavanger was meant as an homage to scavanger in the U.S., and devastator/devastar in Japan)
