Discussion Topic: IDW's ...-ation Saga Conclusion

Since IDW took over the reigns of Transformers comics in May of 2005, they have taken on the difficult task of hooking fans with a newly reimagined G1-style "IDW-verse."  Multiple plotlines starting with Infiltration, then Stormbringer, then Escalation, then Devastation...  with many "Spotlight" issues carefully intertwined.  The series concludes this week with the final installment of the Revelation series Spotlight Sideswipe, which hit store shelves yesterday.  Wrapping up several years worth of plots in one, 22-page issue was quite a feat.

So I want to know.  What do visitors of this site think of the IDW universe, and in particular, what do you think of Spotlight Sideswipe and the conclusion of the ...-ation series?  Check out what Simon Furman had to say about it in his BLOG.

I thought it sucked. I love Sideswipe and this issue's portrayal of him as this vindictive, out of control, compassionless punk really pissed me off. I don't know (or care) what it means when G1 said Sideswipe and Sunstreaker are "brothers." But I didn't need some further (irrelevent) explanation by Furman (which makes even less sense...) The spirit of G1, regardless of what the whole brothers thing means, is that Sideswipe and Sunstreaker are partners, friends and work together, and look out for each other... Not this load of crap.

I've been following the -tion series for years and enjoyed most of it. This issue was a total let down for me.

* it's called Spotlight Sideswipe and he's in less than 1/5 of it. Actually, he's practically totally irrevelent to the overall story.

* EJ's (painted) art, is quite nice, and very unique for TF comics. But the flow of the writing is so complicated I found it very difficult to follow.

* Furman's story bounces around from about 30 different scenes in the span of 22 pages, and left me wondering what the bleep is going on? Like what's up with that picture of half Jetfire half (who is that?) talking?

One minute you see Bludgeon bust in to lay a smackdown on Jetfire. Next thing you know Jetfire's walking around carrying a sword. Am I supposed to infer that they fought and that Jetfire won? Maybe someone can explain it to me.

Oh well, at least the Animated comics continue to kick @$$. PLEASE keep Marty Isenberg going. I LOVE this series...

I'm holding off on what happens in "Revelation" as I won't read it until it's in a TPB format. But, I have read the others and just picked up volume 3 of Spotlight (which, I still have yet to read), but I digress.

I've enjoyed the IDW-verse quite a bit. I'm just a little upset that I think I know how it all ends seeing as the next story is "All Hail Megatron" and "Maximum Dinobots", and supposedly it's in continuity with the -tion arcs. So, I've enjoyed the -tion stories, but my favorite stories have most definitely been from the Spotlight issues. They were great stories and we got to see some 'bots that don't often get the... well... spotlight...

I actually agree w/ all the above. Generally, I've really enjoyed the -ation series stuff from IDW. But yeah as hyped up as I was for Spotlight Sideswipe, I'm feelin' a little flat. What a confusing and bizarre story.

For as little as Sideswipe was in it, it should have been called "Candlelight: Sideswipe" or better yet, how about just calling it, "Revelation part 4!"

Jeez, I wonder what's going to happen to the series now....

Revelation has been good so far(can't wait to read Sideswipe), but imagine how excellent it would have been if Revelation had a full six issue run, and give Sideswipe his own Spotlight. It's great to see EJ Su doing the art again!

This is surprising. in the last ~24 hours unicron.com has had just under 5,000 pageviews. Among these, it appears that only me and dead-head-Ted have read Spotlight Sideswipe, the conclusion to several year's worth of IDW continuity! I figured this would be a HUGE discussion topic... Interesting.

The ation series was very good but the final part proved that you can't put 2 years+ of plot lines in one issue. There are still so many questions and characters left up in the air. The final fight between Prime, Nemesis & Galvatron was WEAK! Why does Prime always have to get his butt kicked? I wanted to see him give it to Nemesis the way he should have. IDW has done a great job with the comics over the last few years and brought some new things to the fold. I hope they continue to deliver good stories. Maybe next time do a "special" large size issue to rap up major story lines.

Well you can chalk me up as one one of those who have read Revelation pt 4.
Overall, the whole IDW verse? I think I like it, but it's just different. I would have preferred that IDW just pick up the stories that DreamWave didn't finish and carry on the universe (it sucked so bad that War Within vol. 3 only had 3 of 6 issues). But... that's a statement better spoken two years ago. The IDW verse isn't bad. Although... Infiltration was too slow for me. Otherwise good.
And I wasn't that thrilled with Revelation pt. 4 either. They should have made this it's own series, and maybe ran Spotlights along side way if they wanted to. Sideswipes attitude at the end felt so cheap after all this... and too much was being attempted to be told in that one issue.
BTW, Dead-Head-Ted, Bludgeon was being controlled by Jhiaxus, who was trying to control a ton of other stuff, including I think Sixshot, Monstructor, and who knows what else, so he couldn't kill Jetfire, who in turn established some control over Dreadwing (hence the half face).
But yes, too much trying to be told. And so pivital as well, with an ancient Prime gone bad, and Galvatron as well!
One the that is NOT addressed though: what happens with Sunstreaker/Hunter??? Last I knew, they had merged into a Headmaster and just escaped from Scorponok. And then there's Verity and Jimmy, who may be brain dead... What happened there?
But then, maybe we'll find out with Maximum Dinobots... since Grimlock was last seen I think in his ship, vowing to find his Dinobot team.
