1988 Bomb-Burst!

Posted by:

It's time we celebrate the 20 year anniversary of the Pretenders!  Wait.  Why isn't anybody cheering?  Okay, so Pretenders, revolutionary as they are (then and now) are generally not considered among the all-time best ideas of the Transformers toy line.  But for a lot of reasons it makes sense to take a closer look at these oft forgotten characters of the Generation 1 series.  Why you ask?

Well, all signs indicate the possibility that the very likable Sari character of Transformers Animated may, in fact, be a Pretender! (No spoilers here! She may just have a bionic arm!?)  Rumor has it there may be a pretender in Revenge of the Fallen, AND if that isn't enough, the first of Decepticon Pretender to get the complete character page treatment actually appeared (~sort of~) in Transformers Animated;  20 years after the toy's initial release!

Need more info?  Check out the all new character page for BOMB-BURST, now available in the 1988 Transformers Section!

Oh, and by the way the Pretender Landmine page has also been revamped with updated code to include gallery and jump box functionality.

... You guessed it, more to come! ...

"SUIT ON!" "PRETENDER!!"

Yes! The Pretenders were awesome! At least the Japanese versions were: TFs that can fully disguise themselves as (regular or armored) humans or demons. The English versions, TFs that can wear organic suits and look like gigantic fat humans or monsters, weren't quite as cool, IMO.

Yay, Bomb-Burst! I loved this guy's Chojin Masterforce version: Blood. They were the exact same toy, after all.

Any chance of seeing a Metalhawk gallery in the future?

Yeah mon. I dug the pretenders too. I was actually pretty indifferent to the shells but each toy had such an authentic Cybertronian robot and alt mode aesthetic, I dug that...

Metalhawk you say?! Perhaps, would you want to write up a character text/bio/description... everything that's known about him? I have the toy but know nothing about the character.

Ask and you shall receiv-- er, *Ask of me, and I will ask more of you!* :)

Maybe. If I can get around to it.

I could only give half the info about him though. The half that was seen in the show. I can't give much about the manga version of him since I never read the manga.

However, this page might be of some great help:
http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Metalhawk
It's loaded with info.

EDIT: Nevermind. I decided to go ahead and wirte up a few pages on Metalhawk. I'm sending the file to you via email now.

part of Landmine's bio is present on Bomb-Burst's page - notable appearances in the Marvel comic.

Jeez, I wish the G1 cartoon continued at least until 1990, then we could have heard the US voices of the Pretenders!

off subject why the hell is optimus prime 25th at at target i thought it was a walmart exclusive?
Sabrblade said,  - 2008-11-26 19:28:21
Or at least give us a good Masterforce dub, instead of that lame RTM 1 dub.
KilledbyDeath said,  - 2008-11-26 20:50:40
Megatron,I saw the optimus prime 25th at Toys r us, on Long Island not so exclusive any more.

KilledbyDeath, where on Long Island? It wasn't in Hempstead was it?
KilledbyDeath said,  - 2008-11-26 21:15:35
I think I was in Oakdale. Definitely Suffolk County close to Patchogue, on Sunrise Highway. I just saw a Toys r Us and decided I would go look for Titanium Grimlock. I didn't buy Prime though or find any titaniums. Chances are this is not the only Toys r Us carrying him around here. By the way Prime was either $65 or $70. I'll be picking up the encore version instead. I prefer the more dangerous eye poking smoke stacks.

I wouldn't go for the 25th Optimus Prime if I were you. It's very poor in quality.

Since most places are selling it for $60-$70, you could get the Encore version for the same price or a little more.

Ya don't go for it. Me and this guy at work both think that is just dumb @$$ hell. All that for 70 dollars is a rip off and should be used to purchase other transformers that are actually worth getting.

^^^ My thoughts exactly.

I have a book called "Transformers the Ultimate Guide" and it shows Bomb Burst(illistration by Don Figuera.).

Encore Convoy/Optimus Prime even has the (show-accurate) gray Roller!

Pretenders (along with Headmasters) were one of those interesting Transformer gimicks that I was interested in, but never able to get (money was tight for my family as a kid).
I did think Pretenders were cool (and still do), but the execution could stand some improving.
Hey, do you guys have any idea if someone has tried making a kitbashed Pretender figure? I don't just mean of a Pretender character, but of shell and all?
Sabrblade said,  - 2008-11-27 15:41:07
Well, you that Universe Legends Jazz can fit inside his old Pretender shell.

Those are some great updates. I do hope to see the rest of 1988 worked on and updated.

That's when the G1 series got lame and I stopped collecting until G2 came out.
Pretenders are not transformers.
