Hasbro 80s Promo helmets found on Ebay

Ebay, the ever-popular online retailer, has brought two more items to our attention. A seller has two items in stock that appear to be long lost TF gems of the 1980s. They are helmets that have belonged to costumes of G1 Grimlock and G1 Kickback. These costumes, as the seller claims, were supposedly used during live promotional appearance at various Hasbro-related events back in the 80s. From the looks of it, these helmets seem to be authentic, but real or fake these are pretty darn cool.

I don't know. Something about them looks fake. You'd think if hasbro made them they would look alot better. Never the less they do look really cool.

Who knows? If only these were released commercially as Halloween costumes, now that would be cool.

If they are legit, then they are about 20 years old and probably from overseas or at least Mexico (you'd be surprised what you can find there). I just think they look kinda shabby and certainly not worth my purchasing dollar.

Well at first glance, they may not look expertly made, but then, we're talking about items made for a maybe a one time use, or maybe a few at most. Perhaps Hasbro didn't want to go all out and spend money to produce a bunch of high quality helmets for a few promo gigs.
Not to mention as compared to the quality of the Transformers figures themselves (weren't they all made over in China?), these helmets may have been made in a hurry, but simply put, designed and built over here without the full resources available to Hasbro/Takara (not to mention it may have been all up to the Hasbro advertising team to make these).

A lot of us seem to be overlooking something about these masks: They *weren't* made by Hasbro; the auction even states it clearly below the images. They were made by a costume mask and hat company in New York. That should help explain why they look a little off; they were made by costume-makers who were probably working from some promotional images and had never seen the characters before. Personally, I think they're pretty danged impressive even without knowing that.

These look like the costumes/masks that they use to wear in the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park back in the 80's. Don't know if these characters were in Florida, but I saw them in the Hollywood one way back when. Sweet memories...
