Optimus Prime on Letterman!

Posted by:

Who says the war against the Decepticons has left Optimus Prime without a sense of humor?  Hear Peter Cullen as you've never heard him before on the Late Show with David Letterman, doing the "Top 10: Things That Sound Cool When Spoken by a Giant Robot!"  Outstanding!

Isn't it bad enough that the best movie since the first one in 2007 is getting such bad reviews? but now, this.

This is more like something Dr. Smoov would do. I'm surprise Cullen would actully do this.

Still, LOL.

I thought all around it was crap. I am so surprised Peter Cullen would do that

I thought the very first one about Jergins lotion was the best. I thought Letterman was very rude. I am also surprised Mr. Cullen would do it too.

7/8/09:My wife saw it today and she said it was dumb and that it sounds like Mr. cullen sold out.

Alright! More national attention for the Transformers. Believe it or not, I actually thought of writing to Lorne Michaels to suggest to him that Optimus host an episode of SNL.

Live from New York its Saturday night, IMO the best. Although the Rabbi comment does tie into the Family Guy comment of Optimus being jewish
cyberwuss said,  - 2009-07-08 15:21:57
Don't blame it all on Cullen. As far as I know he doesn't do CGI robot animations, just voices.
Sabrblade said,  - 2009-07-08 15:23:25
@Clutch: Yeah, but that was G1 Optimus, a different gut in a different universe from Movie Optimus.

What's interesting is that, unlike nearly all the other "Optimus Primes", Movie Optimus isn't even a Convoy.
starscreamer said,  - 2009-07-09 14:21:46
(sabrblade) what are you talking about???? convoy?
Sabrblade said,  - 2009-07-09 16:53:06
I mean, in all the past series before the first Bay movie, nearly every character that bore the name "Optimus Prime" was named "Convoy" ("Konboi") in Japan. The term "Convoy" is also used as a rank, and is the Japanese equivalent of the "Prime" rank. Meaning that those characters that were at the rank of Prime were at the rank of Convoy in Japan (however, this was not always the case, as some other Primes were not always Convoys and some other Convoys were not always Primes).

But, Movie Optimus Prime is the very first "Optimus Prime" character to not be named "Convoy" in any form in Japan. Instead, the Japanese used his American name "Optimus Prime" ("Oputimasu Puraimu") for the very first time. So, this Optimus in the first to not be a Convoy.

For more info on the Convoy rank, look here: http://www.tfwiki.net/wiki/Convoy

I like that they did this but they really could've used some better jokes. But I wonder, could SNL be next?

Not a Letterman fan so I won't bother with watching the clip. Wanted to pass some news. Encore #18 will be Skids. No release date but I would guess the end of October. Lime green E-hobby Skids anyone?

Hey Jumpercliff! Was it you that I saw on a message board saying that there was no such thing as a Blue silver Bluestreak sold in the US? I'm 37 yrs old and I can tell you that you are dead wrong. I owned one. Bought it in the summer of 84 right behind Rumble,Ravage and Frenzy,Laserbeak. Bought it and the cassettes at a drug store near Dare elementary in Grafton Virginia. Had to have him. My neighbor owned an 82 280ZX Turbo in the same color and I loved that car. Saw other Blue silver Bluestreaks for sale at Sears, J C penny, Kay bee, and Toys R Us right up until Christmas that year. Saw the first all silver Bluestreak about the same time Jetfire and Shockwave, 1st two of the second release transformers, were hitting the stores (Oct-Nov 84).Sold Bluestreak and the rest of my G1 collection to a collector at Traders World flea market between Cincinnati and Dayton summer of 96. Wish I had kept him. Had no idea just how rare he was until the last few years. Makes me sick to think about it.
Sabrblade said,  - 2009-07-10 01:09:32
Can you prove that claim in any way? Cuz I think you'd better take a look at this page:

MDK Megatron. said,  - 2009-07-10 01:26:22
How? He's long gone. I'm sure of what I bought and owned. Why argue? The guy I sold him to was not convinced in conversation that I had one. He didn't believe it until he was holding him and saw Hasbro stamped on him. Ended up geting $800 for everything I had. All loose, no boxes. He complained about my Prowl having Smokescreen launchers as well but I bought him right after Bluestreak and he came with white not gray launchers. If you don't believe me I'll live. You have no idea how much I wish I could prove it.

I looked at your link. I'm really aggravated and that's putting it mildly. I love how history get's reinvented. The fact that none have resurfaced doesn't mean none were made and sold. Only that none have resurfaced. What else can I say?
Sabrblade said,  - 2009-07-10 02:23:41
I ask because there aren't going to be many who would believe you. I myself am a bit skeptical over this, but I'm not ruling out your claim completely (yet). It's just one of those things that, when first heard, one's initial reaction is nearly-utter disbelief, and yet theres a small part in the back of the mind that wonders/hopes that there might be a slim chance of some possible truth to the claim.
MDK Megatron. said,  - 2009-07-10 03:12:49
Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt. I don't really remember how many I saw at the store after I bought mine but I absolutely remember seeing two the same day I went out to buy Prowl. After Bluestreak I wanted him next real bad. My mom took me to the mall near our old house in Grafton VA. Went to Sears and saw Bluestreak but no Prowl. Same deal at Kay Bee. Went to Pennys and they had him but he was $14.99. Complete ripoff. I could buy Soundwave and Buzzsaw at Sears for that price. Left the mall and went to Toys r us and they didn't have Prowl or Bluestreak for that matter. Went back to Pennys and my mom was pissed at this point but I did get Prowl. I've never ever bought another thing from JC penny. I think I saw Blue Bluestreak after that day as well but I can't be sure on that point. I was primarily looking at ones I didn't already have. I do know that nobody else I knew who collected Transformers had one. If I knew then what I know now I would have kept him. There was no way I could know at the time. I feel damn lucky to have owned one. Obviously it's the holy grail of G1 Transformers. One day another will show up and that person is going to make a whole lot of money. And this myth will be put to rest.
MDK Megatron. said,  - 2009-07-10 03:55:03
I'm loosing sleep over this. My best guess as to why it is so rare is simple. It is clearly the first G1 toy to be retired. They were replacing it before the second release toys were even out. I'm sure one will show up someday. I know what I had and more than that. The others I saw were bought by other people in the area. Whoever has one boxed today knows what they got. There retirement fund. If I still had mine I probably would not want to talk about it. Even loose and worn but intact it was worth more than what I sold my whole collection for. Hindsight is always 20-20. I'm 100% sure I'll never own another.
MDK Megatron said,  - 2009-07-11 17:54:33
I sent a friendly E-mail to Wikipedia. Won't make a lick of difference but I had to let them know what I thought of there research on Bluestreak. Whoever says that they were never sold here, and I don't care who it is, doesn't know what they are talking about as far as I am concerned. Another one will show up! If no one believes what I'm saying I completely understand. Doesn't change anything.
