Erik here with ToyRobot Magazine! It's been a while since I've had time to sit down and write anything at all. My wife and I recently got a house, so that's been a crazy adventure and has taken up a full month of our time. Now that the dust is settling, we can get back into our normal routines, which for me is writing about Transformers, so let's get back into things with a short write-up highlighting a few new pieces to The Vault, my private collection.

Let's revisit an old topic I've covered before: Transformers Decoys and Kabaya Milk Caramel figures.

I am obsessed with small figures in the world of Transformers and even some other lines like Power Rangers, Monsters in my Pocket, and Tiny Mights. There's something fun about being able to collect tons of toys that take up almost zero space when compared to full-scale toys. Also, when they come out, they are often very cheap.

Transformers fully capitalized on this trend of small toys in the 1980s with their own line of figures called Decoys. These were small toys sold in vending machines or packaged with figures as a bonus.

Coinciding with this, a company called Kabaya was releasing its own mini toys, often packaged with sweets. They released small model kits, and several lines of keshi figures as well.

We're going to focus on the Milk Caramel Line. This subset of figures consisted of 4 distinct series of figures: Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers (consisting of two waves of 9 figures). These were nearly identical to the Decoy line except they were just a tiny bit smaller and thinner; all had unique poses to distinguish them from the decoy line. Below we have an example of Lambor from this set.

The second series of figures, called Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers 2010 was a wonderful glow-in-the-dark series. I was able to complete this set a while back and did a whole write-up on it several months ago. These are semi-rare today.

In the third series, the Headmasters took a turn and put small figures on a stand. The bottom of the stand was a stamp with the figures face and name. These are very hard to find and I was able to get Abominus in a lot recently. These figures will often be broken at the base.

The fourth series is the only one I'm missing an example of, the Super God Masterforce. These are rarer still, and each figure was small and came with bot mode and alt mode. To boot there was a combiner of King Poseidon!

My eventual goal is to complete a full run of these figures, and if possible, have each of the color variations represented.

If you ever find yourself bored collecting Transformers, remember, there are layers and layers of neat collectibles; you just have to look.

#SOUNDWAVE SUPERIOR! #Transformers

The beloved, classic has received much love in recent years. Warrants a close look comparison! Starting with this newest edition #studioseries86 toy is pretty clearly the hands down, definitive/ best Soundwave toy Hasbro has ever released for the mass retail.

Missing from this convo: タカラトミー MP & Roboson full feature audio player/ self-transforming robot. Undeniably amazing - but not really *toys!* More super high-end, collector pieces. Any item that makes me a 42 year veteran TF collector hold my breath in fear something breaks when transforming, it’s not a toy to me!

If what you’re looking for is the definitive & best Soundwave toy - that scales with the rest of your CHUGS display - SS86 is where it’s at!

Shade of blue = perfect.
Clean smooth panels reminiscent of G1 cartoon animation - YES!

G1 authentic sculpt - from robot mode to Walkman design - again: neat perfection.

I super DIG it scales w/ other cassettes like Earthrise Laserbeak (if that’s your preference…) or other 3P tapes Hasbro hasn’t released yet.

Vs Siege toy? Not a fair comparison either. I love the Siege toy. And it’s not trying to be G1 authentic, be-all, end-all cartoon accurate SW. W/ his beautiful traffic signal alt mode, techno detail & battle damage deco. I have a special place in my heart for this toy. It’s simply trying to be something different than SS86 and I still love it.

Compared w/ Earthrise, hard to find Walmart exclusive releases or subsequent TT Dramatic Capture Series toy. There’s NO comparison. SS86 is better in just about every way: scale, sculpt details, color and Walkman mode…

Obviously, NO comparison vs the 1984 original. That toy will always have a very special place in my heart. From the Diecast metal feet, stickers, and every difference between it & the cartoon depiction - I love everything about it. CLASSIC of a toy as exists in this world.

Despite all these other versions, G1 Soundwave deserves a modern update. Thanks to SS86, that update has arrived!

Pretender Monster Team - comprised of Bristleback, Birdbrain, Icepick, Scowl, Slog and Wildfly unite to form MONSTRUCTOR! #Transformers

This is a super fun set. Frankly, I’m pretty satisfied with this scale, considering the size of the original toys and given the state of tariffs and plastic costs in the world… not sure we need a $1000 set of 6 Voyagers…

Now, what if some official license holder that can make official products, like Blokees makes a full set functional pretender shells to accompany them?!?! YES PLEASE!

Ooooooh I cannot say enough about this signature late 80’s, early 90’s color palate which just pulls at my nostalgia heart strings! The alt modes while wacky as heck, and yet an authentic homage to the original.

Super stoked to have a modern update to this this G1 combiner set. Thank you hasbro and the TF design team for making this one happen!

#Transformers Legacy (2023) Voyager BLUDGEON

As prominent a role as he has played comics fiction over the years, I thought he deserved more than a partial re- tool/deco of Tarn (even as good as that toy is!) That said, getting my hands on the Monstructor set gave me a reason to finally crack open and enjoy this toy.

I must say, I’ve enjoyed it quite a bit. Considering how many appearances Bludgeon made in various comic series, he looks very different from series to another. So therefore, some artistic liberties in the toy are acceptable to me. He does have a beautiful new head sculpt, his signature katana blade and (mostly!) green tank mode. Though I’m never going to give him the “double fusion cannon” configuration on his right arm - that’s a signature Tarn thing… There are several other configurations for those cannons that work well for the character.

He looks rad next to the Pretender Monster team and toy engineering remains as solid, pose-able and fun as Tarn original release.

Hmmm, maybe time to start a dedicated shelf for comic famous characters…..

Colors scream late-80’s /early 90s nostalgia to me - and I DIG it!

Bludgeon & the Pretender Monsters team have a long, shared history in #Transformers comics fiction. (You’ll have to read about it in the wiki!)

I got my hands on the Monstructor set and it gave me a fabulous excuse to crack open and enjoy Legacy Bludgeon as well. I think they look great together and provide a good sense of scale.
