TakaraTomy celebrates 2010 with new Masterpieces and Unicron

Some of this news may actually be a tad belated, but it's too good to ignore any longer. In 2010, the Transformers franchise is taking some new directions with its products. Known Hasbro plans include the generically-named "Transformers" toyline (including the movie-based "Hunt for the Decepticons" subline), the "Power Core Combiners" toyline, the Classics/Universe-esque "Generations" toyline, and newer innovations like the "War For Cybertron" video games and the new cartoon "TF: Prime".

As it turns out, TakaraTomy is dishing out their own ways to get in on the 2010 action. Namely, by commemorating the third season of the G1 cartoon, which they received under the name "Transformers 2010".

First, several new Masterpiece figures are coming out. One of which is MP-03G Starscream Ghost Version. Representing his ghost form first seen in the G1 cartoon (and later seen in several other places), this figure is an almost completely clear version of the normal MP Starscream (using the show-accurate Hasbro colors of course). e-Hobby has an order page for it that shows that it comes with a manga/comic when purchased from them.

The next Masterpiece is MP-04S Convoy Sleep Mode. Similar to but still different from the recent MP-01B Convoy Black Version, this Convoy/Optimus is decked out in blacks and grays to resemble his deceased body seen in the 1986 G1 movie. Though, it's okay, because this toy actually represents him a "Sleep Mode" instead of being "dead". ;)

Finally, the last of the Masterpieces is something more of a rumor instead of a confirmation. According to the Twitter of s250 (who's words usually turn out to be true in the end), we learn of a possibility of MP Rodimus. This would make sense in commemorating G1 season 3/TF:2010, where he was the Autobot's leader.

In that same Tweet, s250 also mentioned something about Unicron and "OP & Rodimus". We'll get to Unicron in a moment, but the "OP & Rodimus" that he's referring to is merely the two-pack of the TFA Deluxes Optimus and Rodimus doen in clear/crystal verisons. This is old news, so moving on.

In conclusion, have you ever wanted to own a G1-accurate Unicron figure? I mean, sure the Armada Unicron figure is somewhat pretty accurate to the G1 Unicron animation model, but it isn't an exact match. What if I were to tell you that there is going to be an even more G1 accurate Unicron coming soon? Toy Hobby Market has an image of an official G1-accurate redeco of Armada Unicron with an all new remolded headsculpt to better resemble his appearance in the 1986 G1 movie. Like the MP Convoy Sleep Mode and the Optimus/Rodimus 2-pack, he will be available in September later this year.

personally, i think armada Unicron looks good as it is. ive never liked g1 unicrons face, and his colors arent that great either. idk it may be just because I grew up with armada.

Woah! I've gotta admit, while G1 Unicron was always a little bland in the color department, I think that redeco looks great! I may actually consider getting it if it sees a stateside release.

But you know what figure I would buy regardless of where it were released? Beast Wars Neo Unicron. Let's get that in some G1 paint and release it instead of the lousy Armada figure!

What we really need is not just a movie acurate paint job but also a movie acurate unicron. neo unicron looks small for some reason I might be wrong iv'e never seen compared pics. The wings on the armada version are on his back. If you have seen the movie, the wings are on the sides of his upper arms kind of up by the shoulders. It needs a collar around his neck. In the movie unicron has one set of horns, I understand that armada version has two sets to use in the transformation.
If you wanna go ahead and buy another repaint you might as well as find a custom on ebay or request one from frenzyrumble.com . Dont get me wrong I was excited to see the pics and how cool it looks and sabrblade did an awsome job, but come on takara. What I wanna see is a Unicron masterpiece maybe at least three feet tall (wishful thinking). I guess im just sick of repaints and reissue's for seventh hundred time.
Good job SB.

If only that G1 deco of Unicron were true... DAMN that looks GREAT!!!!
Sabrblade said,  - 2010-05-21 09:38:01
What do mean, Perceptor? That Unicron is an official TakaraTomy product. It even has a new head mold.

You know what would really complete Masterpiece Dead Prime? (Shhh.. he's just 'sleeping'!)

If each one included a picture of a traumatized kid from the 1980's after seeing thier beloved hero pass away.
Jumpercliff said,  - 2010-05-21 17:49:38
I would definitely want that Unicron, and the Armada one. You could say that Unicron could alter his appearance whenever he travels to a different reality.
Sabrblade said,  - 2010-05-21 19:37:03
Or, it's just a different body. ;)

To AmyBlue:
You know, I was a kid in the 80's and it really didn't bother me that they killed Optimus. I know one kid who came to school in tears, and I was just like "Yeah, and Megatron totally got shafted."
AmyBlue said,  - 2010-05-22 07:29:52
I saw the movie as a youngling too, but my only emotional reaction was being absolutely terrifed of Orson Welles.

Still though. That has got to be the most morbid idea for a repaint ever, I mean what's next? Zombie-Prime? It happens. Totally cannon; from the episode "Dark Awakening". Gotta through in a brain-gnawing gimmick for that one, though.
Sabrblade said,  - 2010-05-22 09:32:37
Maybe an all-gray redeco as him coated in that metal from "The Return of Optimus Prime - Part 2".

Though, has no one noticed the MP Ghost Starscream? That thing looks epic! And according to its bio, it's not just the ghost of G1 Starscream, but an amalgam of every Starscream who has ever died, fused together into one ginormous ghost bot.
AmyBlue said,  - 2010-05-22 09:43:29
Every Starscream that's ever died? Does that mean there's 8 copies of his Animated self in there?
Sabrblade said,  - 2010-05-22 10:11:33
Um, none of the Screamer clones were said to have died.

Here's the official MP-03G bio:

Was refering more to the infamous 'Starscream Death Montage'
Sabrblade said,  - 2010-05-22 10:39:42
Let me rephrase myself. He's an amalgam of every Starscream who has ever died and left his mortal body behind.
Sidewinder said,  - 2010-05-22 19:38:04
I remember thinking, as a kid, who the heck Orson Wells was, and why was it such a big deal that he was voicing someone I had never heard of until the movie. But hey, Zombie Prime would be interesting. Heck, I'd get him. And Cosmic Rust Megatron. And you have to admit, Amy, the Starscream Death Montage was fantastic.
PORTER said,  - 2010-05-23 00:02:14
galvatron just blasted the energon out of him causing starscream to crumble like dust...can you say chuck-norris-style;)...(to sidewinder):do you think even if orson wells had not died after the movie came out he would still be unicron in the unicron trilogy?
AmyBlue said,  - 2010-05-23 02:01:12
Voiced by Orson Welles; AND he's got Ivan Drago's theme song playing at the start of the movie... If that's not evil, I don't know what is?

Porter:: Probably not. All reports on the matter say that Mister Welles hated the role and didn't even remember his character's name.
Sidewinder said,  - 2010-05-23 06:56:17
Have to go with Amy on this one Porter, I think if Mr. Welles had been in better health he wouldn't have done the movie. The role itself wasn't that far outside of the rest of his filmography, which included productions ranging from War of the Worlds, to Treasure Island, to Bugs Bunny: Superstar, and a cameo in the The Muppet Movie. Transformers wasn't even the only animated movie he'd worked on at that time. He voiced Pippo in the english version of Enchanted Journey. But, I do believe that he came to resent a lot of these roles because they took him so far away from more "classical" or "main stream" roles that he was known for in his younger years.
