TF3 Filming In Detroit, pt 1

Posted by:
Perceptor at 2010-09-10 2:15 pm   (site update)
Yesterday, we had the great pleasure to visit the set of Transformers 3, in a less than posh neighborhood of Detroit, Michigan.  Complete gallery HERE  Highlights include:
A NEW DECEPTICON! (Could this be Payload?) -No one on set could tell us!  -I honestly think some of the kind crewmen we talked to would have told us.  But they didn't know.  My guess: Swindle!
* Ratchet and the sweet red Ferarri.
* NEST vehicles (Brawn?)
* Optimus w/ TRAILER!
* We saw all 3 WRECKERS.  Although the blue one was covered most of the time while we were taking photos.)  --But they were all there.
* Bumblebee and Sideswipe where there too, though we couldn't get a good photo of them, as they were parked behind Optimus.
On-set fire, probably going on during filming of a scene we couldn't see.

We did get to watch a scene being filmed outside of Packard Motel.  A group of men, army types acting fired up in a big black GMC pickup (not Ironhide).  They shot a scene with the men jumping around the truck.  Then set-up camera angles, to shoot a scene where Sam Witwicky and Sgt. Epps were driving in a old, blue ~1960's something car.  Tyrese waved to the camera as they drove down the street.

My 5 year old son, proudly wearing his Bumblebee shirt said to me, "They were waving to me because they like my new Bumblebee shirt!"

GREAT fun!  A once in a lifetime kick.  Special thanks to Will Shin for the navigation and photography help!

pic 15 looked like a police car prowl maybe every pic is up for debate
Buccinator said,  - 2010-09-10 16:46:27
Police car says Chicago police. This is apparently another scene or scenes supposedly taking place in Chicago.

That armored truck looks AWESOME. Great pix dudes! You ROCK for bringing them to us!

Dudes you are so lucky! To actually see those "Wreckers" live. So eff-ing cool!

So who are they, indeed?!?!? If they're Autobot Wreckers, then it's not Lockdown as guessed earlier. Green one has to be Springer, if it's a Wrecker, right? I could see them using the name Roadbuster for the red one. And he was an original Wrecker... hmmmmmmmm

Wow dude, You got some nice pics. I'm jealous that you got to see that in person. Nice!

Very nice Perceptor! Glad our efforts paid off yesterday!!!

I wonder if it's going to be like the opening of ROTF where the Autobot to Decepticon ratio is 8+ against 2. (8+ = Skids, Mudflap, Arcee, Chromia, Elita-1, Ironhide, and Optimus Prime ...PLUS a whole army of human NEST attackers) vs. 2 (Demolisher & Sideways)

Y'know, I like cheering for the Autobots as much as the next guy, but how about a fair fight! If it turns out that it's all those Autobots vs. 1 poor little armored truck, then I'm cheerin' for the Decepticons!

--My other hope for the next film is that the Autobots aren't quite so excessively vulgar. I REALLY want to take my son to the movie this time around. I don't need Skids calling any human a p-u-s-s-y. No dog humping scenes, or worse Wheelie humping.
Sabrblade said,  - 2010-09-10 22:50:32
Perceptor, you just stated the main reason I disliked ROTF: the excessive obscenity and crude humor. I mean, if it's not funny, don't use it!

As for the 8:2 ratio, it worked a lot better in Animated where the Decepticons clearly surpassed the Autobots in terms of battle power and weaponry, necessitating the Autobots to outnumber the Decepticons.

Though, there was one other thing in ROTF that had me do a double take: The barbaric nature of the Autobots. I mean, remember how in G1 where Optimus was this noble, righteous, iconic hero with moral values? Where's any of that in ROTF? He and the other Autobots were slaughtering Decepticons left and right without any second thoughts. While the Cons may be evil, they're still persons in thier own right (or at least they're supposed to be). When Demolishor was defeated by Prime and Ironhide, clearly incapable of being a threat any longer, instead of offering him a chance to surrender, they mercilessly make him state his final words and then just blast him. Cuz, you know, all the great heroes of our childhood were merciless and ruthless. Not!
Perceptor said,  - 2010-09-10 23:38:44
But the crude(/lame) attempt at humor really only took up about 25 seconds of a 2.5 hour movie. That's *not* enough for me to say, "I didn't like it." Besides, Bay has already talked about there being no, lude/crude humor in TF3. You can put that in the bank.

And you, just nailed the other issue I had w/ ROTF. But OP being a TOO badass for me is something I can justify. D's just killed his buddy Jazz... They're at war... I get it. I still don't like it, but I can live with it, in the scope of what's otherwise a good film aside from these 2 issues.
Sabrblade said,  - 2010-09-11 00:38:21
I'd say it took up a lot more than just 25 seconds. The parts that disturbed me the most were:
* The two dogs messing around.
* Sam's mom getting "high".
* Plenty of Skids' and Mudflap's dialogue jokes.
* Simmons' full on exposed thong-clad butt.
* Jetfire "farting" a parachute.
* Wheelie on Mikaela's leg.
* Devastator's wrecking ball scrotum.

But aside from the vulgarity of the film and the ruthlessness of the Autobots, it was an okay popcorn film. I still consider the other three previous films to be better, though.
Perceptor said,  - 2010-09-11 08:19:34
dogs/wheelie humping & Simmons arse =
BAD. should have been left out of the movie

The brownies, twins dialog, parachute, wrecking balls: didn't bother me. It was a little over the top, but I got a chuckle out of it. I still say: good movie with a few parts minor things I would tweak.

So lets get back to that armored truck we discovered! Who could that be? Would people be upset if that was Soundwave's alternate form? The blue/grey color leads me to think it's possible, but it doesn't seem very "Soundwave". No way is it Shockwave. Who else could it be? Your thoughts?
Shattereduniverseprime said,  - 2010-09-11 09:58:24
The parachute fart didnt come across as vulgar to me (or my extremely sensitive to vulgar things ex wife) it came across as an old bot who had rust in his processors and had been inactive for so long some circuits corroded. As far as the twins language, they just tuned into some websties or tv stations that speak that way to learn english. lol not their fault they dont speak as eloquently as Prime and the others. But I do agree the Simmons butt was too much along with the humping dogs.
Perceptor said,  - 2010-09-11 10:29:02
I just had a thought!

An armored bank car.
A hokey slogan. "SUPERFUND: the future of investing..."

What if that armored truck was SWINDLE???
Alt form makes sense! (moresoe than a tan jeep actually!)
Slogan would be fitting...

Oh dang I would love that!!!!!
lioconvoy said,  - 2010-09-11 12:06:14
the jetfire farting thing was quite amusing in a way but the humping i could do without.
the reckingballs were pointless but not that bad.

swindle is an idea and i quite like it perhaps it is.
soundwave maybe but doutful although we cant be sure.

shockwave again perhaps but more than likely not.

its swindle or some other flamboiant caricter in my oppinion.

and as for the twins i think that it diversifies transformers as not all strate english up themselves caricters and brings them down to earth.

my african friend was quite amused by skids and mudflap. he was joking a couple of months previously about there being no black transformers rasialy and then along came the twins.
rather than a racial slur i think they simply diversify the transformer race and the accents give skids and mudflap a caricter we havent seen before.
to me they came across as dorkey teens trying to be something they're not.
it seems as though the choice for the accents was poking a joke at white teens trying to act black rather than insolting anyone but then again, people will always jump to the defence of some thing or other be it founded or not.
Buxinator said,  - 2010-09-11 12:59:13
The idea that the Autobot twins were racist is nonsense. All stemming from 1 line saying, "Reading? Ah, we don't really do much reading." I hope in TF3 they show the Twins in the Autobot base, with their feet up and reading Shakespeare or somesuch... and Sam saying, "Wait, I thought you didn't read much?" Skids using the same style of speech, could reply, "YO, Ah, meeeeaaaaaaan, we just don't read much ancient Cybertronian! You down with that?"

People are way too sensitive. I think the twins are cool.

BTW, if that armored truck is Swindle... THAT would make my day! I hope that weird SUPERFUNDS decal on the side is an indication of his personality... Wow a movie Decepticon with personality???? That's askin' a lot. --Not just another 10-tons of metal standing behind the barrel of a laser blaster-- Here's hoping! I want it to be SWINDLE!!!! PLEEEEEEEEASE!
Sabrblade said,  - 2010-09-11 14:23:26
I'm not saying the twins were racist. I'm saying that I dislike their constant use of vulgar swear words. You know, the Seven Dirty Words, F-bombs, and other such inappropriate language.

Until the live action movies were made, the Transformers media had been devoid of such language (with the G1 movie being an except using two forced words to get a PG rating) and I was cool with that. Even though Beast Wars upped the use of the "Slag" interjection, that word is only bad if you want it to be. I see more as a synomyn for "Darn!" "Rats!" "Nuts!" "Crud!" and such. Or, in TFA Bumblebee's case of "Slag, yeah!", a synonym for "Oh, yeah!".

But when the live action movies came, the moment I heard Jazz utter the B-word, I sighed a sad sigh. Followed by tons of groaning from Skids and Mudflap's off-color senses of humor.

I like it when there's clean, family friendly material that can still succeed at catering towards an older and mature audience. I am 20 and am neither a fan of cuss words nor do I use them.
lioconvoy said,  - 2010-09-11 16:17:03
the language was prob chosen because of the youth behaviour and speach today to mock teens rather than be insolting.
never the less i agree with you sabrblade i agree that the language isn't nice to hear a lot of and the film should have a higher rating for the language and volger jokes. i would have still gone to see it
Buxinator said,  - 2010-09-11 17:34:42
Check it, so on the detroit set right now, there is a train, collapsed on a building, near it, a jet engine... Is there some possibility of seeing a triple changing Astrotrain? I want some historically important Decepticons
Chylomicron said,  - 2010-09-11 22:50:49
I'm with the other guys who didn't think the Jetfire parachute was a "fart" (I hate that word.) He was just a funny old, malfunctioning bot.

Also, if you take out the "excessive swearing", I also think the Twins are cool.

Know what I mean by, "excessive swearing"?????
Like if you see a planet sized super-villan survive a thermo-nuclear explosion without a scratch, then devour an entire moon that you used to be sitting on, it is OKAY and appropriate to respond, "Oh shit, what are we gonna do now???"

Y'know when there's some dude at school who thinks he's cool and macho *because* he swears every other word? You know the type. They're not cool. Once in awhile for dramatic effect, cussin' is fine. But when it's overdone, it just sounds lame and uneducated.

Are you listening Mr. Bay???? Please heed our pleas!
Sabrblade said,  - 2010-09-11 23:47:58
The way I see it, potty humor = epic fail! >_<
Chylomicron said,  - 2010-09-12 12:20:18
Waitaminute! Are you telling me that when you saw the first TFTM, 1986 Transformers Movie, and adult Spike said, "Oh shit! What're we gonna do now?!" You're going to tell me, you sat back and thought, "golly gee, I wish they wouldn't swear!"

No way dude. I won't believe you even if you did say that!

Like me and the rest of humanity, seeing the first time, you thought, "WOAH! That is awesome!" Because the S-bomb is overused nowadays, it doesn't have the impact it once did. But the point is, in moderation, it can be effective. As if Unicron eating Cybertron's moon wasn't enough, that line made me even more scared.
Sabrblade said,  - 2010-09-12 12:33:31
Dude, I'm only 20. G1 was before my time. I didn't see the 86 movie until at least 2003. And that was when I was constantly surrounded by obnoxious peers who thought it was cool to drop all kinds of curses into every sentence they spoke!

And besides, it was admitted by the makers that both that line and Magnus' line about wanting the Matrix to open for him were both FORCED into the film just so they could get higher than a G rating.
Shattereduniverseprime said,  - 2010-09-12 13:15:31
I feel the G1 "Oh Shit" line was more out of like desperation or awe kinda like Data's line in Generations where he said the same thing as the saucer section of the Enterprise was headed for a planetary crash landing. Who in either of those instances would not have a bit of a *containment failure* either verbally or bodily? The Twins language was over the top because it was constant.....im not against a few well placed, scene appropriate cuss words but not every other word from their vocal processors.... And I totally agree itd be waaaaay funny to see the Twins reading Shakespeare or Dante and have a line like that.....Hint Hint Mr. Bay

I can't wait till Transformers 3! I'm a huge fan of it, but, it might be the worst ever, they are replacing Megan Fox with some other person, I believe someone named Rosie (I hate it when they do that! Grrrr) and I've heard that Jazz will be back in it! I hope its gonna be a good movie, and looks like Skids and Mudflap won't be in it :( no idea what went wrong. I believe the movie will be called, I think Transformers Rise of Galvatron, that's just what I heard, probably isn't right though, oh well, can't wait till 2011! P.S. I don't live in Chicago or anything, but I do live near (usually we take a train) Washington DC, which my mom told me that they're filming there, but they're probably finished.
