Landmines!

I'm not terribly crazy about an Autobot being named after a weapon which according to (real life) international treaty has been banned for cruelty and unintended harm inflicted to countless innocent civilians throughout the world...

Needless to say, the toys and characters are pretty darn cool.  For example, you already know about Energon Landmine and Cybertron Landmine and even the Landmine character that ~"appeared" in the Transformers Movie.  Now, for your viewing pleasure, check out an all new character page for the first Transformer with the name.  To do that, we must turn the clock back exactly 20 years and the age of  the Pretenders!  What's a pretender, all you youngsters want to know?  Well, as the story goes there are places in the universe that don't like robots.  Kind of like the whole mutants vs. society theme of X-men.  So pretenders are Transformers that came with an organic, (human in the case of Autobots) shell which covered a transformable robot body.  In those days, the stories were not carefully planned out and as far as I know, there never really was a grand explanation given for the purpose for the organic monster shell (more on this later...)

Anyway, each toy came with an organic shell/covering, and a smaller robot which typically looked like a very, well (giving it a positive spin) Cybertronian looking alternate mode.  PRETENDER LANDMINE was among the most heavily featured Autobot Pretenders in the Marvel Comics series.  Click the link to this all new character page to learn all about him.

Sorry for the 'eye paint!' What can I say? Back in the 80's I wanted all my autobot toys to come with blue eyes! I should start using all my "alterations" techniques for 'restoration' and clean this (and other) toys up a bit...

Oh yeah. This was the guy whose toy was obese, anorexic, and awkward all at the same time.

How come there's no Masterfroce pics of this guy? While they were different names in each country, each was the exact same toy AND you guys don't have Lander listed as a separate character from Landmine in the 1988 page. so you could easily put images of Lander on Landmines page cuz there is no other place to put images of him.

Well, Perceptor, there may have been a reason to the Monster vs. Human shells, but you'd have to go to Japan to get it, lol. In the Masterforce series, the Pretenders have been on Earth for millenia and were present while the Humans evolved (I guess that's a little after Beast Wars). The Decepticons decided to take on the form of Monsters to terrify the humans, but because the humans showed such bravery, the Autobots took on their forms. Not the best story, but hey! It's an explanation, right?

By the way, does the Decepticon monster thing remind anybody else of TF: Cybertron's hidden and captured Decepticons that Starscream freed? Looks like a reference to me! Which was pretty much what the Unicron Trilogy was best for... cameos...

Uhh, this has positivly nothing to do with Landmine, but I just had to say that I just saw a Transformers Animated commercial, also, this is kinda spoiler-ish-y, involving Ultra Magnus and Sentinal coming to Earth, and Sentinal becoming a disembodied head. And Optimus laughing at him.

Hey, keep the spoilers to a minimum, man! You just ruined a whole bunch of surprises for me.

And yeah TPR, the Pretenders were on Earth a little after the BW. The Neolithic Era IIRC. Then the three cons were imprisoned in the Great Pyramids of Giza, the ruins of Atlantis, and ruins in Peru, I think.

I said it was spoiler-ish-y

If its in a public commercial then its acceptable. They've got to show some scenes from the show yet to be aired to attract an audience to watch the show (any show). If they don't tell us how cool it is, then how would we know if we should watch it?

And Landmine... it never bothered me that an Autobot has his name taken from a weapon. Also, Transformers in Masterforce do not have anything to do with the American characters who share the same molds and colors. The physical toy is the only connection between Landmine and Lander. Although I do wish America had dubbed Headmasters (instead of creating Rebirth), Masterforce and Victory and followed the Japanese continuity instead of branching off onto their own.

The first three Landmines are all construction type vehicles. Pretender Landmine is a miner/ exploration vehicle. Energon Landmine is a road-repair type vehicle who may have gotten his name from cleaning up and after landmines. And we all know that after 2003 they just pull names from a hat.

OMG! Landmine named after a weapon? How many kids, teens and adults are gonna think of that when they hear the name Landmine. I'll tell you what they're gonna think, they're gonna think of a kick @$$ robot who fights Decepticon. This is just another case of "Jazz" becoming "Autobot Jazz" and "Rachet" becoming "Autobot Rachet". God who's next Ironhide because it could refer to a metal butt.

There's lots of Autobots named after weapons. Victory Saber, Blaster, Slingshot, Spitball, Blades. The list goes on

Just seen the commercial. Other than showing us Sentinel Prime, Ultra Magnus, Wreck-Gar and Jazz from the show, there's no actual spoilers.

The dismbodied head thing makes you want to watch the show to find out why he's a disembodied head -- just as I expected the commercial would do.

Great character page, Perceptor. I actually like my guys more cartoonish as well.

I find it unbelievable when you have to explain to people what a Pretender is. I was crazy about Transformers during the late eighties so of course I know what everything is, Triggerbots, Sparkabots, Pretenders, Firecons, Targetmasters, Powermasters, even Motorvators are overly familar to me.

I don't really think G1 Landmine is the same character as any other Autobot by the same name. Neither Energon Landmine or Cybertron Landmine act in any way like I'd expect the Marvel comics character to (Masterforce Lander is someone completely different).
