SB Barricade review/pix

Posted by:

With the new "Screen Battles" assortments starting to hit the shelves, we thought we'd share our thoughts of one I picked up this weekend.  A more organized character page will be put together once our 2008 section exists.  In the meantime, we thought you might like to see some pix and read a more extended review than usual.

From the publicity pix we've seen thus far, it appears there is no difference between the standard movie deluxe Barricade toy and the one included with the new 'screen battles' version.  Not true!  However, the difference is much more subtle, unlike Scorponok w/ an obviously more movie accurate paint application or Longarm with Mikela in the driver's seat and "Mike's Towing" and Bumblebee with improved silver/grey accents rather than black...  To my eyes, the car and the robot look nearly identical.  There is however 1, ever so slight difference!  Can you tell

The difference is in the grill.  Notice how it is all black?  On the original deluxe version the chest has some grey plastic which is part of the small Frenzy toy that comes out of his chest.  This Barricade toy includes a new molded part!  THIS new molded part.  What is its purpose?  Here's the scoop, the Frenzy that normally comes out Barricade's chest is intentionally designed to NOT come out of his chest.  The entire Frenzy toy is made of all black plastic and as you can see is unpainted.  The plastic piece fits inside the collapsed Frenzy toy as seen here and here.  In order to figure out what was going on, I had to take the toy apart.  The piece fits inside Frenzy once collapsed and it's sole purpose is to prevent you from taking the Frenzy component out of Barricade.

The idea, of course is that this toy comes with another Frenzy toy.  A smaller, more detailed, more movie accurate, but unposable version.  Pictures from every angle can be seen here, here, here, and at these links: barricade4d, barricade4e, barricade4f, barricade4g

Here are some picture-links to the Sam and Mikela figures:  Sam1, Sam2, Sam3, Sam4, Sam5Mikela1Mikela2Mikela3, Mikela4, Mikela5, Mikela6, Mikela7

The Sam and Mikela figures are quite a nice addition to a set-up.  It's really awesome to have accurately scaled versions of these characters.  However, you do lose the functionality of having Frenzy be able to eject from Barricade's chest as he does in the movie.  Thought you would want to know what you're in for before you put down $20 for another Barricade figure.  Have a great weekend all!

I may just have to buy it so my roommate can play with the miniature Megan Fox. Don't know how I'd feel about that though...

So, now we got a Frenzy that is gray, black, blue, and red. Impressive, but not worth me buying it. I already have Barricade & Frenzy and they'll do just fine for me.

Also, despite that Frenzy figurine's awesome detail and size-accurate scale, it has zero poseability and that keeps it from being a winner. I'll take my stick-figure Frenzy over that army man-wannabe Frenzy any day.

Hmmmm.... it surprises me that Hasbro would go to all that trouble just to keep the Frenzy figure from coming out. I would have thought they would simply design a new grill piece that doesn't come out try try and save on the plastic instead of making the full Frenzy figure, and then designing a piece to keep him in there.
But I digress. I was able to find the original version of Barricade (and Frenzy) myself, and I'm perfectly happy with them. Personally, to me they were the two coolest Decepticons in the movie.

overhaul: ur absolutely right that was a waste making a frenzy, coloring it all black, then molding a new piece to prevent it to come out

also i too have an original barricade & frenzy and i love them... wouldnt want to buy or trade them for this new set

Um, actually guys, according to the review, they didn't paint Frenzy black. They left him UNPAINTED, meaning he was naturally black.
KilledbyDeath said,  - 2008-01-06 02:06:26
That has to be one of the dumbest ideas ever. I can see a lot of kid's breaking these because, "He is supposed to come out"!
NightwatchMagnus said,  - 2008-01-06 12:20:32
The upainted frenzy looks cool IMO.

First, I don't think they've quite reached the superhero position just yet, imo.

Second, that guy was the Angry Archer, and yes he was lame.

Third, I like what Bay said about Jazz not returning, cuz if he was, Hasbro would likely make another Jazz toy and I don't want to have to buy another one (I got the regular and Final Battle, period). Also, this might not be fact since awhil;e back, Bay said he would mislead fans by leeking false info to them. I hope this isn't false, though.

Lastly, I checked out TFW2005.com and your right, they must be out. But the only voyager I want is Incinerator, that's it.

I was surprised by it KbD, and practically almost broke my Barricade, before I decided to take it apart and see what was going on. Figured everyone would want the heads up.

Hey, Sabrblade, no need to be an a#@. If you you delete my comment again your comments go too. Also, I was just saying what I thought. Thanks a lot for making me angry, so called fan.

I didn't delete your comment, Ty.

I have no power to do that.

I'm not an administrator or a Lukis bro. I'm just a site visitor.

I wish it hadn't been deleted, cuz now my comment makes no sense, and you had a lot of good info in it.

Uhh, guys, anybody can delete comments. It's open to all viewers regardless of administrators or otherwise. That's why sometimes all of the posts get deleted because somebody thinks they are funny and gets rid of them all. So, now you know Sabr, so if there is spam feel free to get rid of it by clicking on "help remove inappropriate comments" at the bottom of the "Add a comment" feature.

And Ty, be careful to not jump to conclusions. Just because Sabr was the next to post, doesn't mean he was the deleter. And if your comment is deleted, then somebody must have felt you said something inappropriate, or your tone was inappropriate, or something. In such a case, you could just repost what you said before, but try saying it differently or something. Obviously somebody didn't like something you said, so just move on and try saying what you want differently. And also, just be careful about your additude, we're all friends here.

No problame-o man. Just adding to your comment
why even mold a frenzy too put in there? why not just leave it empty?
Perceptor said,  - 2008-01-07 08:34:41
Good question. I wonder, why take trouble to assemble it, like why put in rivets to add arms, why mold the head at all? It is one of the more strange modifications I can think of in recent memory. I'm glad I bought the toy, but $20 for a Barricade that the Frenzy doesn't come out of his chest and 3 extra humans is a bit steep, IMHO.
Rhinox said,  - 2008-01-07 08:38:08
uhm, said? cause it would leave a huge friggin hole where his torso should be.
And how stupid is everyone here? the reason they just remolded frenzy was that it was CHEAPER than designing a new chest.
TriPredRavage said,  - 2008-01-07 10:24:10
Yeah, but, Rhinox, in the same vein, leaving the hole would have been cheaper than making a new Frenzy and making a new part to hold the old one in, too. And you have no right to insult the other users, so don't. Everyone has the right to voice their opinions and thoughts, but no one has the right to undermine another's opinions and thoughts.
Perceptor said,  - 2008-01-07 10:39:01
heh, heh that's fair. Point taken Rhinox. :)
Rhinox said,  - 2008-01-08 06:52:18
Okay,stupid was a big word.
But you'd expect people here to know basic knowledge about factory molding.
ultraprime said,  - 2008-02-24 19:20:26
That amazeses me that they would go through all that just to keep Frenzy from comeing out.
Alex said,  - 2008-03-15 22:49:11
Hey! I just wanted to say
THANK YOU SO MUCH for this explanation.
I just bought Barricade today out of nostalgia,
and I fussed and pushed for hours because it seemed
like something really ought to happen with the chest...
It was driving me mad.
Inspired by you, I took it apart and took
out that piece and put it back together,
SO much better! Thank you!
