Me ... SLAG!

Posted by:

The Unicron.com symposium on Dinobots wouldn't be complete without unveiling an all new page for the latest incarnation from Animated!  Okay, so all the packaging, catalogs & promotional materials have this typo referring to the toy as "Snarl," but as Derrick Wyatt said at Botcon 2008, "He'll always be SLAG to me!"  It's now linked to and available in the 2008 Transformers Section.

I just knew Snarl was coming.

I think that if the word "slag" was not a bad word in the UK, than Snarl would've been named "Slag" instead.

I just think the name copyright was lost. I don't think it has anything to do with the UK or Slag being a curse word in the TF world either. Especially considering there is the Robot Heroes "Snarl" coming out that IS G1 Slag.

if the name change was baised on the UK's slanderus use of the word, i wonder if and how it would affect the IDW comics and reprints of the Marvel comic

It hasn't affect the reprints of the Marvel Comics because they're just reprints and not alterations to the content. It hasn't effected the IDW comics either because they always stick to the original names.

My only problem with the name change is that G1 Snarl, the Stegosaurus, was my favorite Dinobot. Even though he's completely omitted from the '86 movie and he never really did all that much. So, I guess that means if we ever get an Animated version of him, his name is going to be something along the lines of "Striker" or such.

You have a mistake on the page, Perc. The part that says:

2003 strangely, the Dinobots Stegasaurus was named Sludge! and the Universe lion was Snarl.

That's wrong. The Dinobots Stegasaurus was named Snarl. The Dimetrodon packaged with him was named Sludge. The Universe Lion was named Snarl as well, and the Universe Stegasaurus was named Striker.

Well, the TF use of the word "slag" has had some effect in the UK. Back when Beast Wars aired in the UK, it was aired on the early morning magazine show GMTV, and the word was usually excised. Transformers Animated seems to have avoided the censorship so far, but this may be because older people watch GMTV, whereas Nicktoons (the satellite channel which airs Animated in the UK) is mainly watched by hyperactive children. The show has been moved to 8:00 at night however, so maybe someone noticed its use.

I think Animated Snarl should be reformatted into a stegosaurus. Not a fourth Dinobot; just one of the existing ones getting a new body. But it doesn't bother me that Animated Snarl isn't named Slag. What does bother me is that Robot Heroes G1 Slag is named Snarl on the packaging. Now thats just dumb - they should have named him Dinobot after his team name rather than name him after someone else in his team.

I got Slag/Snarl a while ago, and I do like the figure. I think the only thing I'll paint is his club, because it does look like a carrot. I think that they should have gotten Neil Ross to voice the triceratops again, since he is still active. I mean, if he can do the old Slag, the other TFs he played, Wolverine, the Green Goblin, and Fin Fang Foom, he can do Animated Snarl.

Wow, "Slag" is a curse word in the UK? Beast Wars got me muttering it under my breath (which I still do till this day).
A little trivia though: Snarl IS in the 1986 Transformers movie, but for very, very brief moments here and there. I believe he makes three appearances: one is after the attack on Autobot city right before the Decepticons attack, and another is for the briefest of moments as the captured Quintession ship lands on Junk (if you freeze it just right, you can see Slag in his robot mode inside the ship).
I learned this from the 20th Anniversary version of the movie, which includes two commentaries, and personally I'm glad to own it, even though I still have it on VHS.

It means "slut" or "whore".
