Video Game Review: Transformers PS2

Welcome to the last day of secret reviews before tomorrow's review of Revenge of the Fallen.  While I'm sure it's not really a surprise what today's review is, I know I have personally been looking forward to this one the most.  So, here we go!

In what was probably the most delayed Transformers game ever, we have Transformers for the PlayStation 2.  This game was even supposed to have the subtitle "Prelude to Energon" attached to it, but was ultimately dropped.  There was even a proposed sequel that was (unfortunately) scrapped.  But enough about that.

Tomorrow, we go to the sandbox.  Will Revenge of the Fallen be a burried treasure, or just some litter in the sand?  You'll have to come back tomorrow to see!

I KNEW it! I knew this one was coming today. And I'm glad too. I've seen this game played and it looks fun.

Notice how some of the characters in the game are colored a bit differently then their show counterparts. Like Optimus having blue eyes instead of yellow, Megs having a purple face instead of gray, and Tidal Wave being in toy-accurate colors that differ him greatly from his show colors.

The PSAs were also available on one of the Rhino G1 DVD sets. "Now we know!" "And knowing is half the battle!" (notice they never tell us what the other half is) :P

I've read a 3-page review that compares this game to the Japanese PS2 G1 game. It's actually quite a humorous review. You should check it out here:

Have you done the glitch that let's you walk on and inside Tidal Wave's robot mode head while he's in vehicle mode? If you haven't, here's a video showing how it's done:

I didn't really like this game. There's no replay value, and the incredibly small roster means you get very little gameplay variety. I wanted to like this game but the lack of so many key characters really makes the game feel unfinished. The storyline was also completely barebones and unfulfilling.
If you can get the game for cheap then do it, if only for the generous bonus content and to enjoy the pretty graphics. This is easily the best looking bad game I have ever played, and depending on the price the bonus content alone can be enough to justify the purchase.

Oh my god! I never knew about Tidal Wave's head! That's amazing! I'm going to have to go and try that sometime.

Seriously though, this game sells for like $12 used at Gamestop. It is WELL worth the super low price. I even think it was well worth the $40+ price tag I spent on it back when it was new. In all honesty, if you have a few extra bucks and never picked it up, do it.

@Chaos Bringer: I think the replay value was in the number of Mini-Cons and bonus content. There are something like 50 Mini-Cons to be found. My only problem was that on my first go I explored everything and found 48 of them before beating the game. But there are also all the different levels of difficulty to try. I've personally never really been a stickler for replay, though.

I didn't get into it. It wasn't terrible, just kinda awkward. But I did hate the bosses - I remember Starscream being too fast for me and I was confused as if I was actually hitting him or not and how long I had to go before I beat him.

That was actually something I really liked about this game. There was a serious sense of strategy. One of the Mini-Cons that can be recovered in the first two levels (Starscream being the second boss) has an electirc attack that sort of magnetizes to enemies. He makes pretty short work of Starscream in that fight if you have him equipped.

Also, did you know that Demolishor was to have been a boss in a cave level, and Ramjet (Tidal Wave's Mini-Con) was to have been a mini-boss inside Tidal Wave?

I did know those things actually. If I am not mistaken, artwork of Demolishor's CGI model is actually an unlockable in the game.

Did you also know that they were planning a sequel to this game based on the Cybertron series (but it was canceled)?

Yup, I said that in the actual news post. Goes to show you didn't read the update other than the Game Review, lol.

No, I did read it, but I just missed that second-to-last sentence in the second paragraph for some reason. I recognize all the others, just not that one.

Guess I was too excited to read the review that I kinda read the news post a tad too quickly and missed the sentence completely.

lol, okay then, my appologies. I'm glad that you had such high spirits for today's review. One more to go!

Yeah, though it is kinda too bad that you're not gonna do the Japanese PS2 G1 game, as it did have an English audio track.

@Sabr: Eh, maybe one day. If I get the chance to play it through.

I liked the game myslef, but I think it lacked ALOT of material. More autobots, and a Unicron that TRANSFORMS...
