Unicron.com RSS Feed Announced

Posted by:
Brian at 2007-08-01 9:48 pm   (site update)
I am pleased to announce that Unicron.com now offers an RSS feed for all you feed readers out there (myself recently included).  If you are unfamiliar with RSS, I recommend Google reader or Bloglines for trying out RSS.  (In newer browsers, a little orange RSS icon will appear at the right of the browser's address bar when you're on the main page, and the news pages.  That will be the main link to our feed for now.)

Are there any readers out there who use RSS?  If not, then I at least made a nice feature for myself!  As usual, thanks to all our readers and contributors for helping make such a great site!

Ha! I'll try not to let it hurt my feelings! I'm fortunately well aware that most people on the internet aren't RSS fanatics. I'm still trying to get my brothers to even know what it is, after all. Still, it's a useful feature for me, if no one else. I've been testing it for a month or so.

Okay, so Brian, why don't you tell me and others who have never heard of it, what it is and why we'd want to implement it.
TriPredRavage said,  - 2007-08-02 06:25:22
Yeah, Brian, I have no idea what it is. Clue me in and maybe I'll check it out.

If you're up now, you don't have to call me. You should call your bro instead.

RSS is basically a different way of reading the web. Rather than checking in on all the sites you read constantly (to see if there's an update), by subscribing to their RSS feeds, your feed reader will tell you if the site has had an update, and how many updates since you last read the feed. It's pretty powerful and useful for people who want to keep up on a whole bunch of sites every day.

It's kind of an odd feature for our site (or for any site), because it's just a (very) stripped down version of going straight to www.unicron.com. There's nothing you get in RSS that's not on our site already, other than a possible convenience factor. But there's a lot more on the site than is in the RSS feed.

So, I didn't exactly clear anything up there. RSS is a pretty amorphous thing, but it's gaining some popularity on the web (relatively speaking), and I'm bringing unicron.com up to speed.

Actually, I think its pretty cool. Most of the RSS that I've seen used has been on things like LiveJournal, Xanga, Yahoo Groups, and similar things where there is sort of an interactive feature going on. From my point of view, its always been a way of updating you as to what is happening, so that when/if you're interested, you can go and check it out.
Like, if you happen to have a subscription to Flixster. They send you an RSS feed in your email that gives you updates about new movies and stuff. Other websites do it as well. Its pretty cool, actually. It can be useful for a lot of reasons, but some RSS feeds aren't really so.
I, personally, like the concept of one for this site. But, I'll probably still come back here on a daily basis even if there were to be one for it or not. I have for years, so why stop? lol
Jumpercliff said,  - 2007-08-02 11:16:29
So basically, this RSS is like a newsletter that keeps the subscriber up-to-date on changes to a website. Am I right?
Starscream said,  - 2007-08-02 11:21:38
I sure don't know Jumpercliff.

Oh, just remembered! I need to do something right now, so hold down the fort for me until I get back. Thanks!

Hey guys, how do you become a member of unicron.com? Just curious.

don't ask...don't ask
Starscream said,  - 2007-08-02 17:56:58
Hey, ya ma ghost! lol. Sorry, but why should I not ask?
TriPredRavage said,  - 2007-08-02 21:11:21
You kinda have to earn it. But I don't think there is a set way, I'm sure that my story is different than Knightwing's which is different from Blasten Blaster's which is different from everyone else's.

But don't go asking for our stories, you must walk your own path, so to speak.
Starscream said,  - 2007-08-02 21:28:40
Um, what?
TriPredRavage said,  - 2007-08-02 21:29:45
Exactly.

For anyone interested in being a, "friend of unicron", (well, we like to consider *everyone* who visits our site a 'friend') But if you're interested in being an official contributor to site content, you start by shooting me an e-mail. Easy as that. :)

To answer your question in the most fair way possible: If you can figure out what to do to be a member, you will be judged and a dicision will be made to that effect. :) It's really not as cryptic as I make it sound. But in keeping with what TPR said, we each found our own way in to the Unicron.com family.
TriPredRavage said,  - 2007-08-02 22:04:49
Here here, Knightwing.
Starscream said,  - 2007-08-03 06:38:48
Wait a second, thats not the real knightwing (the one 1 comment above this one.) Knightwing spells his name without a space between knight and wing, that guy does!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ultra Magnets said,  - 2007-08-03 10:49:38
BTW Knightwing did you think about TyScreams idea yet?
knightwing's alter ego said,  - 2007-08-03 13:37:05
don't listen to him he's the evil knightwing. he's just a repaint of me, the orignial knight wing muwa ha ha ha ha
Knight wing said,  - 2007-08-03 17:40:24
Actually Starscream, I spell it both with and without the space. I have to log in to the admin to use "Knightwing" in the comment author box. But, a lot of times that is the only reason I would have to log in. So if all I'm doing is commenting most of the time it's "Knight wing". I don't actually know who my alter ego is, but at least it's funny. :)
