Hugo Weaving to play Megatron in Transformers

Various sites are reporting that Hugo Weaving has been cast in the role of Megatron in the upcoming Transformers Movie.  The story originally "broke" in a cryptic message on the SECTOR 7 site (password: NBETWO):

"Operation Hungry Dragon 2 continues. As of today agent H. Weaving has officially convinced S.S., M.B., R.O and A.K. to oversee the Megaman issue. The recording will commence immediately.  All the years of investment into Agent Weavings public persona have finally paid off. We will monitor the campaign from the inside and report on its progress free from suspicion.  By this summer, the population will think N.B.E.'s are nothing more then figments of an overactive imagination.  Our power lies in our secrecy."

Thanks to some crack sluthing on the tfw2005 boards, a posting by Michael Bay on his blog, seen here, adds clarification to the cryptic portions of the post.

Agent H. Weaving= Hugo Weaving.
S.S. = Steven Spielberg
M.B.= Michael Bay
R.O.= Roberto Orci
A.K.= Alex Kurtzman

<<editor note>> I'm only just slightly diappointed that Welker didn't get the gig. Hugo Weaving was outstanding in V for Vendetta, and will make a GREAT Megatron.

To me it says volumes about what the producers of the film are going for in a Megatron character. They're not doing the, Welker "I shall be AVENGED Autobots! I shall RETUUUUUUUURN!"

This Megatron will be cold, cruel, and calculating, and SOOO kick @$$! So does this mean that the real villian of ALL the matrix movies was MEGATRON?!?! That the story actually portrayed a world conquered and controlled by Megatron! How ironic that the instrument of his defeat was the *matrix*!!! HA!

Man this is gonna be cool!!! haven't seen V for Vendetta yet, would you recomend it? I also have seen Megatron always as the REAL villian, not Unicron or Galvatron because for one Unicron didnt show up until the end of season 2 and he was colored weirdly and two, galvatron sucked majorly as a commander after he went insane. cant wait to see what soundwave looks like in the second movie!

Oh, also what is your perspective on the G1 Trypticon figure? Cause' I was wanting to pick on up off ebay but didnt know if he was worth the moola.

And if you want to know of something weird but cool that I came across is when I was recently messin' around with ol' Excellion, I found out that Armada overload can actually hitch up pretty tightly to the back of excellion. this makes him look like Rodimus sort of. just thought you'd like to know.

In Bay's posting a few days ago, he was complaining about the whiners on the net. I think if the whiners he was refering to stepped back and looked at the movie objectively, they would have to admit that the info thus far all says this movie will be this summers biggest blockbuster.

I LOVED V for Vendetta. Hightly recommend it. Another GREAT role of HW that I forgot about, he played Elrond, King of the Wood Elves in the Lord of the Rings films. Like I said, this guy's got moxy and I think he'll make a great Megatron.

o yea! HW is a GREAT idea for Megatron! if he can take a character who wears a mask thru an entire movie and give him a lot of emotion, then he'll do wonders with a character liek megatron. his voice just has so much presence.

Don't forget the Oracle. Good guy in both the Matrix Trilogy and Beast Machines.

Hugo Weaving as Megatron...
My initial knee jerk reaction was that he'd make Megs boring. But... it just might work. Maybe I'm type casting Mr. Weaving. Agreed, he was great in V for Vendetta (I liked that movie too. I in fact dressed up as V for Halloween).
My complaint now about Megatron is how he looks. A plane? And that face? Um... not quite Megatron enough for me.
TriPredRavage said,  - 2007-03-25 11:56:49
Yeah, but Megs has been a plane before. Quite a few times actually. There was G2, Machine Wars, Energon, his third mode in Cybertron, so him being a plane is really nothing new. As for the face, I think its a nice change. Personally, I was starting to get sick of Megatron's box head, that's why I weclomed the Unicron Trilogy so openly for Megs. Besides, it's supposed to strike fear into the hearts of men! You can tell me that if you saw a giant robot with that face, you wouldn't pee your pants out of fear.

This is cool. I was expecting to see a slew of comments to the effect of, "OH NO! It's the end of the world they didn't choose Welker, this movie is going to SUCK!!!" (Maybe they're busy whining on other message boards, but I haven't seen it.) Sure, in a way it's too bad it's not Frank, but this move makes a lot of sense to me. Love it.

Wow, I totally dig this move. Hugo Weaving is a great actor, and happens to have a pretty sweet voice. Watch some of the making of interviews on the Matrix DVD extra features... Did anyone else catch that this guy actually has an Australian accent? Check out is bio on IMDB he was born is Nigeria! (and spent most of his childhood raised in Australia. I didn't even know that he was V until seeing this news discussion. Love that movie!
As for the new look to Megatron... I think it's pretty cool. I was having a really hard time picturing Franks voice with this new look anyway, but Hugo?... totally. Out of any reused TF character Megatron's looks have always changed a LOT from series to series. I like that he turns into a jet. I wouldn't mind a little more concrete looking transformation, but I still think the look is nice. If you're still grumbling about the looks, read the prequel comics. Don Figueroa has done an really nice job with Megatron.

I'm Fine With Hugo Weaving As Megatron
Besides Frank Welker Isn't Reprising His Role
As Megatron
