Dinobots, UNITE!

Posted by:
Perceptor at 2008-11-10 4:22 pm   (site update)

... And so they did!   In 2004, the Dinobots, Grimlock and Swoop, were redesigned with entirely new molded toys.  However, unlike the other Energon Autobots, when these two unite they form a new persona: Mega Dinobot (just like the concept for Superion, Bruticus, etc...)

So, should we consider these two the "missing link" to connect the Unicron Trilogy to Generation 1?  Or do you simply see them as the Grimlock and Swoop of this, "alternate reality?"  Let the debate begin!  Visit the link above to see their all new character page, now forever linked to in the 2004 Section.

It is a possibility they are the same as the originals but where were the other dinobots! I saw grimlock and swoop and wondered if they would release the oter dinobots but they never did!

Hmm, these ones are hard for me to figure out. Armada already had its own team of Dinobots released alongside its line (like how Beast Machines did) as Wal-Mart exclusives. And these molds were originally meant to be released (as the first new molds) in the Universe (2003-2007) toyline.

I'm not a big fan of demension-hopping (with only a few exceptions, including Unicron, Primus, Axer, and a few more), and I see no reason for G1 Grimlock and Swoop having to go to the Armada/Energon reality. Besides, Grimlock had a Beast Wars toy, so its quite possible that he stays in the G1 reality till the time of the Great Upgrade.

Plus, there's that small bit of confusion in the Energon cartoon where Cruellock Terrorcons are referred to as "dinobots".

We could take the easy way out and put these guys in the category of "toy-only characters". Since they've had zero fictional appearances, that's currently what they are. It may not sound very appealing, but it does save one from a lot of headaches and stress. But this isn't the first time. There have been several "toy-only characters" over the years now.

I consider the Unicron Trilogy to be a parallel universe to the G1 mainstream universe. So, I just believe that they are the U3 universe's version of Grimlock and Swoop.

So, you're saying that there are two Grimlocks in the UT?

Guys, wouldn't it just be easier to say that the Unicron trilogy takes place far in the future, after G1 but before the Maximal upgrade? Welcome to my world! :)

Jeez, I really want this set!

On the plus side of today, I did get A Dinobot....Animated Snarl! I'm surprised that they didn't ask Neil Ross to reprise the triceratops. But then again, they did have a budget. Also, a small correction to an earlier statement: Corey Burton did NOT voice G1 Swoop, it was Michael Bell.

Just looking at this Grimlock/Swoop pack as stand alone figures, I have to say I really like what they did with them and I really wish I had bought them back in the day. Sadly the one time I saw them in the store I did not have the cash for them and when I went back, gone. I am not, however, a fan of the combined mode. They don't need to combine, there is no reason for them to combine. As far as connecting them to the rest of the Transformers Multiverse, I could see them being upgrades of their G1 counterparts if we are saying that the Unicron Trilogy is happening far in the future of G1. Personally, I really liked the figures from Armada, Energon, and Cybertron, but I am not a fan of the storyline so these figures get merged into my own continunity, while their original continunity gets wiped.

Never owned the Energon Dinobots sadly, they just looked kind of cheesey at the time. I do, however like the G1 Grimlock mold for it's artistic use of design, detail, and a well executed color scheme. Unfortunately, G1 Grimlock is a figure that has not yet graced my shelves due to low income.
However, I will be purchasing a MP-08 to satisfy my need for a decent Grimlock.
The best way to resolve the story conflict would probably be to just wait for Hasbro to explain to us how all of the Universes connect, then and only then can we be sure of the Transformers Mythos.

Well Perceptor, I did some research and found at least one way how the UT doesn't look to be the future of G1.

Here's one way how it doesn't work in the English version. In G1, we know Unicron was "created"/built by Primacron millions of years in G1's past, and doesn't make himself known until 2005, when he is also blown up.

This contradicts Unicron's life in the UT. After Unicron was defeated by Omega Supreme, he goes into dormacy and disguises himself as that Cybertron's moon 10 million years before Armada. He doesn't resurface until the Unicron Battles begin in 2010 (that's when the Armada dub takes place).

How is it possible for Unicron to attack Cybertron and then get blown up (in the same body Primacron built him as) in 2005, when he was disguised as Cybertron's moon for 10 million years and didn't break free from his moon shell until 2010?

And I'd rather not explain how this also wouldn't work in the japanese version of either series, because that is too much pain for the brain.

Primacron? Even for considering G1 alone, there are countless stories told of Unicron's origin. If you really want to work Primacron in, let's just say that he, "played a role in the development of" Unicron ('s body)...

>>After Unicron was defeated by Omega Supreme, he goes into dormacy and disguises himself as that Cybertron's moon 10 million years before Armada.

He does? I don't ever remember this story, but I must admit, I could barely stand to watch the cartoons. I may very well have missed that show/explanation entirely. My "fanon" includes the comic ("Worlds Collide") series which provides a subtle explanation of dimension hopping. Thus despite Unicron's defeat in the hands of Rodimus Prime and the Matrix, Unicron found a way to rebuild his body, into the form seen in UT.

I don't know enough about Japanese lore to comment on that skull splitting complexity to comment on that...

But again, let me state for the record: This is how I see it. I respect everyone's opinion who chooses to enjoy Transformers mythology a different way. If it makes the mythos more fun think of it differently, then more power to ya! :)

You make a good point Saberblade.
My thoughts on this, it's realy quite simple, if the predacons and maximals were able to find away to travel back in time I think Unicron may have found the same wormhole and waited for the perfect moment to strike.
Sidewinder said,  - 2008-11-11 00:04:44
Just to muddy the waters a bit...who said Primacon only had one Unicron? Look at the multitude of transformers that have the exact same body type. Who's to say that the entities responsible for Unicron only had one manufactured? The spare Unicron, Unicron 2.0 if you will, very well could have been involved in the conflict with Omega Supreme and then put into dormancy while Unicron 1.0 was trolling the universe gobbling up planets. When Unicron 1.0 was destroyed by Rodimus, it could have sent a signal to the dormant 2.0 that set itself into a "reactivation" process that took from 2005 to 2010 to complete. He'd been down for "10 million years", it take him a while to reboot all his systems.

Nope, Sabr, I consider the Energon 2-pack as the only Dinobots in the Unicron Trilogy. If you look at the packaging on the Wal-Mart exclusive figures, you'll notice that nowhere on the set are they labeled as part of Armada.

http://www.tfu.info/2003/Autobot/Grimlock/boxed.jpg

They are in Armada style packaging, but so were many other exclusives that ended up being part of the RiD line. Granted some of them ended up in Unicron Trilogy comic stuff, but I consider those figures as part of the RiD continuity and ignore those comics. That said, I believe the Wal-Mart exclusives are RiD Dinobots, not Unicron Trilogy.

So, I believe that in RiD, there are two Grimlocks. The Dinobot one, and the Build Team one.

I think of the Dinobots sub-line as being the Universe bodies for the G1 Dinobots. They're not AEC universe or RiD universe to me.

As for the Energon Dinobots, I like to pretend they don't exist. They really are terrible toys. And the only good thing about them is that the character art makes them look good... but don't be fooled.

That's why I put quotes around "created". I don't think he actually "made" Unicron like he said, just his body that we see him in in the G1 movie.

>>He does? I don't ever remember this story, but I must admit, I could barely stand to watch the cartoons. I may have very well have missed that show/explanation entirely. Oh, yeah. I forgot that you go by the Armada comics instead of the cartoon. That bit about him being defeated by Omega Supreme was said in the Energon cartoon to explain why Unicron was disguised as the moon and when he went into dormacy.

And I do believe that Unicron from G1 and Unicron from A/E are the same guy. But the time that he dimension hops differs in my view. After being blown up in the G1 movie, the events of all the post-movie series (sans Beast Wars, that's before G1), occur, leading up to his ressurection in Beast Wars Neo. He is then killed again by Big Convoy. After Beast Machines, the Universe War begins, where his new redeco minions seek to revive him again. I guess they succeed somehow, but then he and Primus leave the G1/BW reality and dimension hop to the A/E one, and the events of those series begin.

Man, I like these "intellegent debates", so long as they don't become hostile, of course.

Wowza, interesting Sabr. By A/E do you mean armada and Energon? and UT equals unicron trilogy right?

I don't know enough about Neo, but I can grove to that theory! Sounds good to me.

I'm very surprised to hear that you think the Unicron from G1 movie UT are one and the same! How very "trying to fit everything together of you!" :) Keep the theories comin'.
